GOVERNOR WILLIAM JANKLOW
Hall of Fame Inductee - 2001

Governor Janklow’s leadership during his previous two terms as Governor of South Dakota and his single term as South Dakotas Attorney General in the 1970’s and 1980’s turned the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally into a true tourist event and family gathering, for not only Sturgis residents, but the entire Black Hills, western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. Today the Rally is far and away South Dakota’s number one tourist event, attracting riders and tourists from literally every corner of the globe. Based on South Dakota’s relative size and the size of the Rally today, which increases the state’s population by at least 50% by even the most conservative estimates, there is no comparable event in the world. Additionally, Governor Janklow worked hand in hand with the motorcyclists South Dakota, keeping anti motorcycle legislation at bay and promoting the positive aspects of riders and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
