Jay Jackson: A Champion for Motorcycle Safety and Freedom in Indiana

In the world of motorcycling, few individuals embody the spirit of advocacy and community as deeply as Jay Jackson. Since joining ABATE (A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education) of Indiana in 1983, Jay has dedicated his life to promoting motorcycle safety, supporting riders’ rights, and fostering a vibrant motorcycling community in the state.

A Journey of Commitment

Jay's journey with ABATE began as a county representative, where he quickly recognized the importance of education in ensuring motorcycle safety. His passion for teaching led him to earn his certification as an instructor for the Motorcycle Safety Division (MSD). In 1996, his hard work and dedication paid off when he was appointed as the Motorcycle Safety Director. By 1999-2000, he had risen to the position of Chief Instructor, laying the groundwork for what would become a transformative era in Indiana’s motorcycle safety initiatives.

In September 2002, Jay took on the dual role of Executive Director of ABATE while continuing to serve as the Motorcycle Safety Director. This dual leadership allowed him to drive change and growth within the organization while maintaining a focus on safety and education. His responsibilities included overseeing seven Board of Directors’ meetings and seven Advisory Committee meetings each year, along with managing ABATE’s numerous annual events.

Transformative Leadership

Under Jay's leadership, Indiana’s Motorcycle Safety Program flourished, training over 67,000 individuals since its inception. His unwavering commitment to motorcycle education has been a cornerstone of the program's success, helping riders of all experience levels gain the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the roads safely.

Jay is credited with bringing ABATE back from the brink of bankruptcy in 2002. His strategic vision and tenacious approach revitalized the organization, ensuring its sustainability and continued advocacy for motorcyclists’ rights across Indiana. His efforts have made ABATE not just a safety organization, but a crucial voice for motorcyclists in the legislative arena.

A Voice for Riders

Jay's influence extends beyond the realm of motorcycle safety; he has been actively involved in politics at all levels. Serving on the national Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) Board of Directors, Jay fights tirelessly for the interests of all motorcyclists. He is known for his vigilance in seeking justice and advocating for the rights of riders in Indiana, making sure that their voices are heard in legislative discussions.

His commitment to his constituents is evident in the numerous benefits Indiana’s ABATE membership provides, including access to legal services, banking options, insurance services, and discounts from various local businesses. Jay's leadership has significantly increased the value of ABATE membership, fostering a sense of community and support among riders.

The Freedom Fighter

Jay Jackson is often described by those who know him as the epitome of a “Freedom Fighter.” His dedication, commitment, respect for others, reasonableness, tireless work ethic, and visionary mindset have made him a beloved figure in the motorcycling community. He embodies the values that ABATE stands for: education, safety, and advocacy for the rights of motorcyclists.

As Jay continues his journey with ABATE, his legacy of leadership and dedication to motorcycle safety serves as an inspiration for future generations of riders and advocates. In a world where the rights and safety of motorcyclists are often challenged, Jay Jackson remains a steadfast champion, ensuring that the spirit of motorcycling thrives in Indiana and beyond.
