Terry Rymer: From Yamaha to Harley-Davidson, A Life Fueled by Passion for Motorcycles

Terry Rymer’s journey into the motorcycle world didn’t start in the usual way. Born in September 1960 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and raised by his mother alongside two younger sisters, motorcycles were never part of his early life. But that changed dramatically at age 17, when he purchased his first bike—a 1977 Yamaha IT175. What began as a simple purchase to race and ride soon led Terry down a path that would shape the rest of his life.

His frequent visits to the local Yamaha shop after buying his bike quickly turned into more than just a hobby. In 1978, at only 18 years old, Terry turned his free-time hangout into a full-time job. The Yamaha shop became his classroom, where he learned the ins and outs of motorcycle sales, parts management, promotions, and customer service. These early experiences provided Terry with the foundational tools he would later use to build a career in the motorcycle industry.

At 24, with a thirst for something more, Terry moved to Rapid City, South Dakota, just as the motorcycle scene there was taking off, driven by the explosive growth of Harley-Davidson and the world-famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It was at Black Hills Harley-Davidson that Terry’s career truly took flight. Starting at the parts counter, he quickly worked his way up through the company, proving his dedication, leadership, and business savvy.

After 25 years of hard work and commitment, Terry’s dedication to Black Hills Harley-Davidson was rewarded. In 2010, his lifelong dream came true when he was made a partner in the dealership—a testament to his passion and perseverance.

While his business achievements are impressive, Terry’s true love has always been motorcycle racing, especially Flat Track Racing. His passion for the sport runs deep, and over the years, he has promoted and co-promoted many races, supporting the growth of the racing community. Today, Terry continues to fuel his passion by owning his own race team, sponsoring Sturgis native Dawson Schieffer, who competes in the American Flat Track series.

Terry Rymer’s story is one of hard work, passion, and an unwavering dedication to motorcycles. From his early days hanging out in a Yamaha shop to becoming a partner at one of the most well-known Harley-Davidson dealerships in the country, Terry’s life has been driven by a love for two wheels. As he continues to contribute to the motorcycle community—whether through his dealership or his race team—Terry remains a true icon in the world of motorcycling.
