Sonny Bridges: The Voice of Maine's Motorcyclists
In the rugged landscapes of Maine, where the sea meets the land, Sonny Bridges has carved a niche as a tireless advocate for motorcyclists’ rights. His journey from military service to the forefront of the biker community is a testament to his dedication and resilience, making him a cherished figure among riders throughout the state.
From Military Service to Motorcycle Community
Sonny Bridges spent his formative years serving his country, first in the Army and then in the Air Force during the Korean War. After returning to his hometown in Maine, he traded his military uniform for a lobster trap, becoming both a lobster fisherman and restaurateur. It was during this time that he encountered members of “The Exiles Motorcycle Club,” finding camaraderie and a sense of belonging that would shape the rest of his life.
A Tragic Turning Point
In 1974, Sonny’s life took a pivotal turn when tragedy struck the motorcycle community. While passing through Lewiston, Maine, a car crossed in front of Mike Smith, a new member of the Exiles. The accident resulted in severe injuries, breaking the base of Mike’s helmet and ultimately leading to his untimely death. This devastating event ignited a fire within Sonny, compelling him to advocate for motorcycle safety and riders' rights.
Motivated by the loss of his friend, Sonny began uniting various motorcycle clubs across Maine, laying the groundwork for the formation of the United Bikers of Maine (UBM). Under Sonny’s leadership, the organization rallied together, successfully lobbying for the repeal of Maine’s mandatory helmet law just two years later—a monumental victory for the state’s motorcycle community.
A Lifelong Commitment
Although Sonny stepped aside for new leadership after the helmet law repeal, his commitment to motorcycle advocacy never waned. For the past 36 years, he has remained an active and passionate supporter of various bikers’ rights organizations, tirelessly working on issues that affect motorcyclists.
Sonny believes that the key to effective advocacy lies in relationship-building, and he has made a name for himself as a trusted source of information for state senators and representatives. Lawmakers often seek him out for his insights and opinions on legislation affecting motorcyclists, a testament to the respect he commands in the political arena.
A Passion for the Outdoors
When he’s not advocating for riders’ rights at the statehouse, Sonny finds joy in the great outdoors, indulging in his love for hunting and fishing. These activities serve as a welcome respite from the complexities of legislative work and provide him with the peace and tranquility he cherishes.
Conclusion: A Legacy of Advocacy
Sonny Bridges is more than just a name in the Maine motorcycle community; he is a beacon of hope and support for riders everywhere. His unwavering dedication to advocating for motorcyclists’ rights and safety has left an indelible mark on the state’s legislative landscape. As he continues to champion the causes close to his heart, Sonny serves as a reminder of the power of community, resilience, and the spirit of camaraderie that defines the world of motorcycling. In a state where the open road calls to many, Sonny remains a steadfast guardian, ensuring that the voices of motorcyclists are heard loud and clear.
